Welcome
I have been painting and drawing ever since my teens, and then at St
Martin's School of Art in London. The regime at St Martin's during
my time there was rather limited, with constant life classes, still
lifes and little freedom of expression.
Soon after leaving St Martin's I visited the Wallace Collection, and found that the abstract elements in Japanese suits of armour released me from those limited concepts into the freedom of colour and form in the wider world.
My paintings have embraced many more abstract concepts since then. I work in acrylics because of their flexibility in application. Teaching has been a constant part of my life, from schools to adult education, and latterly through private classes and individual tuition, where students can make rapid progress.
In recent years I have researched the role of women painters in history, following the realisation that women painters seem to have been ignored in pre-1970 English art histories. I have visited museums and libraries here and in the USA and Italy, and lectured on women painters from 1500 to modern times. I am preparing a book on this subject.
My experience has included book illustration, interior design and murals. But painting, teaching and research are the principal elements of my career.
